LegalSifter ReviewPro for Google Docs — User Guide

Your companion for reviewing contracts with AI — from open document to redlined draft, in minutes. For Contract Reviewers · Extensions › LegalSifter ReviewPro

Written by Sara Doutt

Welcome

LegalSifter ReviewPro is a Google Docs sidebar that uses AI to review your contracts. You select a playbook, ReviewPro analyzes your document, and you get structured insights with proposed changes. You can then generate a redlined copy of your document with those changes shown as Google Docs suggestions.

This guide covers everything you need to know as a contract reviewer.

Quick Start

Get from an open contract to a redlined document in seven steps.

  1. Open the Sidebar. In your Google Doc, go to Extensions › LegalSifter ReviewPro › Open LegalSifter ReviewPro. The sidebar appears on the right side of your document.

  2. Sign In. Click Sign In. A login window opens — enter your LegalSifter credentials and complete authentication. The window closes automatically and the sidebar loads your account.

If the login window doesn't appear, your browser may be blocking popups. Allow popups for docs.google.com and try again.

  3. Authorize Document. ReviewPro needs one-time access to this document to run a redline. We only request access to this file — not your entire Drive.

  4. Choose a Playbook. The Playbooks tab shows your available playbooks. Use the search bar to filter by name if needed. Find the playbook you want and click Redline.

  5. Document Analysis. ReviewPro analyzes your document. You'll see progress stages as the analysis runs (typically 30–60 seconds). When complete, the sidebar automatically switches to the Redlines tab.

  6. Create Your Redlined Document. After the document analysis finishes, click Create Redlined Document. ReviewPro generates a new copy of your document with all proposed changes shown as Google Docs suggestions.

  7. Review the Results. The sidebar automatically opens the Redlines tab showing results organized into a Summary, provisions with proposed changes, and a Compliant section.

Getting Started

Opening the Sidebar

The LegalSifter ReviewPro sidebar is available from the Google Docs menu:

Extensions › LegalSifter ReviewPro › Open LegalSifter ReviewPro

The sidebar opens on the right side of your document. If you've used ReviewPro before on this document, it may restore your previous review session automatically — including any sift that was still running when you last closed the sidebar.

Signing In

When the sidebar opens, you'll see a sign-in prompt with the value proposition:

"Choose a playbook. Redline your contract against your company's positions — in minutes."

  • Click Sign In. A login window opens — enter your email and password.

  • After successful authentication, the window closes and the sidebar loads.

  • If you don't have an account yet, click Request a Demo to visit the LegalSifter sign-up page in a new tab.

📝 Note: You'll need to sign in each time you open the sidebar. This is a security measure to protect your account.

Authorize Document

After signing in, the Authorize Document message will be shown. ReviewPro needs one-time access to this document to run a redline. We only request access to this file — not your entire Drive.

Click the Authorize Document button. A new window appears — select the current document and click Select.

Sidebar Layout

Once authorization is done, the sidebar has up to three tabs at the bottom:

Tab

Redlines

View analysis results and insights for your document

Playbooks

Browse and select playbooks to start a review

Profile

View your account info, credits, settings, and sign out

The active tab is highlighted with an orange indicator.

📝 Note: The Playbooks tab is hidden automatically after a sift completes so you can focus on results. It reappears only when you choose to re-analyze the document with a different playbook (see "Re-analyzing with a Different Playbook").

Selecting a Playbook

The Playbooks tab is where you choose which playbook to use for reviewing your document.

Browsing Playbooks

Each playbook card shows:

  • Name — the playbook title

  • Description — a summary of what the playbook covers

  • Redline button — click to start the review

  • Updated date — when the playbook was last edited

Some playbooks may show an Inactive badge, indicating they are not currently available for use.

Searching

Use the Search playbooks… bar at the top to filter playbooks by name. The list updates as you type.

Starting a Review

Once you've found the right playbook, click the Redline button on its card. This begins the analysis of your document.

⚠️ Heads up: If you see the banner "You do not have permission to redline documents. Contact an administrator for access," your account has read-only or view-only access. Contact your administrator to request the required permissions.

Creating a Redlined Document

Generating the Redlined Document

  • Click Create Redlined Document. The button shows "Creating…" while the document is being prepared.

  • When ready, the new document opens automatically in a new browser tab.

  • The sidebar shows an Open Redlined Document link so you can return to it later.

What to Expect in the Redlined Document

The new document is a copy of your original with ReviewPro's accepted changes shown as Google Docs suggestions:

  • Proposed deletions appear as suggestion strikethroughs

  • Proposed insertions appear as suggestion additions

  • Comments you added in the sidebar appear as Google Docs comments

You can accept or reject each suggestion individually using Google Docs' built-in suggestion tools, just like any other Google Docs suggestion.

Navigating the Redlined Document

When you open the redlined document, you can reactivate the ReviewPro sidebar, which will automatically load the analysis results for that document. You can click action cards to navigate to specific clauses, just like in the original document.

Re-analyzing with a Different Playbook

After a sift completes, you'll see a secondary link labeled Redline again with a different playbook below the results. Clicking it:

  • Clears the current results

  • Re-shows the Playbooks tab

  • Lets you pick a different playbook and run a fresh analysis against the same document

💡 Tip: This is handy if you maintain different playbooks for different contract types or jurisdictions.

Resuming an In-Progress Analysis

If you close the sidebar (or Google Docs crashes) while a review is still running, don't worry — the next time you open the sidebar on that document, it automatically detects that a review is in progress and resumes showing the progress view. You don't need to start over.

Reviewing Your Document

Once the analysis completes, the sidebar automatically switches to the Redlines tab. The results are organized into three main areas:

  • Summary — at-a-glance statistics about what was found

  • Provisions with changes or alerts — the findings that need your attention

  • Compliant — provisions that already meet the playbook's positions

Summary

At the top of the Redlines tab, the Summary card shows at-a-glance statistics for the current analysis.

What's in the Summary

  • Total provisions reviewed — how many provisions the playbook checked against your document

  • Compliant provisions — count and percentage of provisions that passed

  • Changes or alerts — count and percentage of provisions needing attention

  • Total changes / alerts — total number of individual proposed changes and alerts across the whole document

Triggered Alerts

Flags where a provision is missing or unusually risky

Interacting with the Summary

  • Click the Summary header to collapse or expand it

  • Use the Summary to decide where to start — for example, if there are many Alerts, prioritize those

Check Feature (Mark Provision as Checked)

As you work through the findings, you can mark provisions as Checked to signal you've reviewed them and move them out of your active list.

How to Check a Provision

  1. Expand a provision card

  2. Click Mark as Checked

  3. The provision disappears from the open list and moves into the CHECKED section at the bottom

What Changes Visually

  • The checked provision gets a green Checked badge

  • The CHECKED section header shows a count of how many provisions you've checked

  • The section is collapsible — click the header to show or hide its contents

💡 Tip: Your checked state is saved, so if you close and reopen the sidebar for the same document, your checked provisions remain checked.

Uncheck (Reopen a Checked Provision)

If you marked a provision as checked by mistake — or need to revisit it — you can reopen it at any time.

How to Uncheck a Provision

  • Expand the CHECKED section at the bottom of the Redlines tab

  • Find the provision you want to reopen

  • Click Uncheck (shown with an undo icon next to the provision)

The provision is immediately restored to the open list in its original position, along with all its action cards.

Focus in Document

When you're reviewing an action card, you can jump directly to the matching location in your Google Doc.

How It Works

  • Expand an action card in the Redlines tab

  • Click Focus in document

  • The button briefly shows "Focusing…" while ReviewPro locates the passage

  • Your cursor moves to the relevant location in the document and the passage is highlighted briefly in yellow so you can spot it

📝 Note: If an action applies to multiple places in the document, the card shows "{n} locations" — clicking Focus in document walks through them.

💡 Tip: Use this to read the original language in context before deciding whether to accept or modify the suggestion.

Action Card Details (Once Expanded)

Click any action card to expand it. Each expanded card shows everything you need to evaluate the proposed change in one place.

What's on an Expanded Card

  • Action name — a short description of the finding (e.g., "Add mutual non-disclosure clause")

  • Location count — shows "{n} location" or "{n} locations" if the action matches more than one passage

  • Focus in document button — jumps your cursor to the matching text in the Doc

  • Suggested Changes — the heart of the card:

    • Remove: text shown in strikethrough that ReviewPro suggests deleting

    • Add: text shown in green that ReviewPro suggests inserting

    • Modified: if you've edited the proposed text, your edited version appears here

    • Proposed: the original proposed language (shown alongside Modified after you edit it)

Compliant Section

The Compliant section lists all provisions in your contract that already align with the playbook — no changes needed.

What You See

  • A collapsible section titled Compliant with a green pill badge showing the count (e.g., "5 Pass")

  • Click the section header to expand or collapse the list

  • Each compliant provision appears as a card with the provision name and a Pass badge

💡 Tip: The Compliant section confirms what's already working in the contract so you don't have to go looking for it. Reviewing this list is a quick way to validate that the contract covers your baseline positions.

Getting Help & Troubleshooting

Support Chat

LegalSifter ReviewPro includes built-in support chat powered by Intercom. Look for the chat option in the sidebar to start a conversation with the support team.

Common Issues

Login window doesn't appear

Your browser is likely blocking popups. Allow popups for docs.google.com in your browser settings, then try signing in again.

Session expired

If your session expires while you're working, the sidebar shows a "Your session has expired" message with a Sign In Again button. Click it to re-authenticate — your review progress is preserved, so you won't lose your place.

Analysis takes too long or fails

If the analysis exceeds the expected time, you'll see an error with a Retry button. Click it to try again. If the problem persists, check your internet connection or contact support.

"No connection" error

This appears when the sidebar can't reach the server. Check your internet connection and click Retry. The message reads: "Unable to reach the server. Check your internet connection and try again."

"Something went wrong" error

If the sidebar encounters an unexpected error, you'll see a Try Again button. Click it to reload. If the issue persists, try closing and reopening the sidebar from the Extensions menu.

Redlined document doesn't open

If the new tab doesn't open after clicking Create Redlined Document, your browser may be blocking the popup. Allow popups for docs.google.com and click the Open Redlined Document link that appears in the sidebar.

My permissions look wrong (can't redline even though I should be able to)

Sign out and sign back in — this refreshes the permission cache. If the issue persists, contact your administrator to verify your account's scopes.

Need more help? Reach the LegalSifter team right from the sidebar via the built-in Intercom chat — or ask your administrator for account-level questions like permissions, credits, and playbook management.
